- Day 1: Welcome to Sicily
Arrival in Trapani or Palermo Airport. Pick up by private English speaking driver. Transfer to Castelvetrano and accommodation in Suite Superior at Villa Baglio Sicilia, Selinunte for 4 nights.
- Day 2: Arkeo Trekking Selinunte and Cusa Caves – Level: Medium, about 4h (Trail)
Today, you will visit the Archeological Park of Selinunte, on the south west coast of Sicily. This unique wonder is one of the largest and most impressive archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. On par with most anything found in Greece itself, Selinunte has lain abandoned for over 2 000 years and its numerous temples, acropolis and agora still stand today in dignified ruins. The walking tour includes also the Cusa Caves, source of the stone used to build the town’s sacred temple.
- Day 3: Trekking on Levanzo Island – Level: Medium, about 4h (Trail)
Transfer to Trapani and boarding to Levanzo Island, characterized by a topography that is mostly flat and slightly hilly. This trek is ideal for all lovers of outdoor activity. You will enjoy a rewarding walk along the paths of the entire perimeter of the island. Along the way, you will have the chance to admire one of the most fascinating places of the island for the color of the stones, the transparency of the water and the underwater flora and fauna. Afterwards, you will return to Baglio to your hotel and stay overnight.
- Day 4: Scopello and Zingaro Reserve – Level: Medium, about 4h (Trail and steps)
Private Transfer to Scopello for a walking tour at the Riserva Naturale Zingaro, Sicily’s first protected area, created in 1981 after a mass demonstration by environmentalists against proposals to build a coastal road between Scopello and San Vito lo Capo. Coves, cliffs, and mountains filled with a rich variety of flora, fauna, and hiking trails. During the afternoon you will enjoy a wine tasting in Marsala before to came back at your Baglio.
- Day 5: Arkeo-trekking at The Valley of the Temples – Level: Medium, about 4/6h (Trail and steps)
Today you will visit, with an interesting archaeological walking guide, the Valley of the Temples and the Archaeological Park of Agrigento. Along the “Sacred Way”, you will admire the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of Concord and the Temple of Juno. Finally, you will visit the wonderful Garden of Kolymbetra, an old water reservoir used by the Greeks and finally, the unknown Temple of Vulcano. Overnight stay in classic room at the 5-starred Hotel Villa Athena for 2 nights.
- Day 6: Arkeo-trekking through the True Sicily – Level: Easy/Medium, about 4h (Trail and steps)
Departure for Sant’Angelo Muxaro, an enchanting little village near Agrigento. You will then meet your guide and start an archaeological walk through the nature and the largest Tholos Tomb in Sicily with him. Finally, surrounded on all sides by the genuine Sicilian atmosphere, you will taste some of the finest Sicilian specialties. The guide will take you to a bakery to taste hot bread with extra virgin olive oil and oregano and homemade cookies.Today’s lunch will be pizza and hot bread with olive oil and oregano alongside other country style typical products. Afterwards, you will return to the hotel and stay overnight.
- Day 7: Roman Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina
In the morning, you will head to Piazza Armerina to admire with a local guide the extraordinary floor mosaics in the Roman Villa del Casale. . During the afternoon, you will be taken to Modica to visit, with a local guide, the Baroque area of Sicily, whose heritage, both for its importance and beauty, has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Enjoy a chocolate tasting at the Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, the oldest confectionary shop of Sicily.
- Day 8: Cava D’Ispica – Level: Medium, about 4h (Trail and steps)
Today you will enjoy a trekking tour along the Cava D’Ispica, a canyon which runs between the towns of Modica and Ispica. Its cliff dwellings were inhabited by humans as far back as the Neolithic Age, commonly considered the last part of the Stone Age. The walking paths take you up along the cliffs that line the gorge. Afternoon at your leisure to enjoy Ragusa Ibla and its baroque monuments.
- Day 9: Siracusa and Ortigia
Today, you will leave Ragusa for Siracusa, one of the highlights of a visit to Sicily. The ideal way to explore Siracusa is on foot, wandering slowly among the gold-tinted palaces, bell towers and its fascinating archaeological area. You will visit the major archaeological sites, including the famous Greek Theater and “The Ear of Dionysius”. Finally, there will be a planned walking tour on Ortigia Island to admire the architectural splendor of ancient medieval streets, baroque structures, and classic churches such as the Duomo, built upon the old temple of Athena.
- Day 10: Vendicari Natural Reserve – Level: Medium about 4h (Trail and steps)
Today you will enjoy the beach and the Vendicari Nature Reserve. Situated on the southern-most part of Sicily’s east coast, Vendicari is a mixture of lagoons (“pantano”), sand dunes, rocky coastlines, and beaches. It was instituted in 1984 and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The high salinity of the ground provides an ideal habitat for Mediterranean “macchia”, herbs such as thyme and rosemary and other prickly customers like juniper bushes.
Today’s afternoon will be at leisure to enjoy Noto the capital of Sicilian Baroque. Finally, you will return to your hotel in Siracusa
and stay overnight.
- Day 11: Trekking at Valle dell’Anapo – Level: Medium, about 4h (Trail and steps)
In the morning, you will be transferred to today’s trailing destination. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Pantalica and the Valley of Anapo is a marvel of Sicily as well as an archeological and naturalistic masterpiece. A railway line, today entirely underground, enables you to walk with swelling emotions: through old tunnels, with the sweet melody of flowing water from the river at your side, and with the high walls of the canyon dominating the sky. Imagine how lovely it must be to go for a train ride through these stunning locations! You will then arrive in Taormina in the late afternoon and relax at San Domenico Palace Hotel, where you will stay overnight.
- Day 12: Trekking on Mount Etna and wine tasting – Level: Medium about 4h (Sandy Trails)
A Unesco World Heritage site, Etna is the highest volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. Today you will be climbing to “Schiena dell’Asino”, 2000 meters above sea level, which is a high altitude natural balcony, leaned on the Big Ox Valley. This valley is a deep basin created by the collapse of a part of Etna. Today, lunch will be served in a local winery. In the afternoon, you can either continue to explore Etna or return in Taormina and relax.
- Day 13: Eolian Islands: Salina – Level: Medium/High about 4h (Trail and steps)
In the morning, you will be transferred to Milazzo and embark to Salina, the greenest and the most fertile of the Aeolian Islands, famous for its capers and the sweet Malvasia wine. Its ancient name, “Didyme”, means twins and refers to the camel-hump shape of its two long-extinct volcanic cones. There are excellent opportunities for walking. Things “not to be missed” on Salina include the charming towns of Santa Marina, Malfa and Rinella and the beach of Pollara, made famous by the film “Il Postino”. For the more energetic, walks to Mount Fossa delle Felci and Mount Porri are stunning and you will admire a raw scenic beauty with dramatic volcanic cliffs plunging into the sea, sleepy villages amidst verdant mountains, colorful fishing boats on pebbly beaches, hills covered in wild capers, and vines heavy with grapes for sweet Malvasia wine
- Day 14: Eolian Islands: Stromboli by night – Level: Medium/High about 5/6h (Sandy Trail)
During the morning, you will be free to visit Lipari, Panarea or Vulcano. In the afternoon, you will be boarding towards Stromboli, the tip of a vast underwater volcano off the coast of Sicily. It is Europe’s only permanently active volcano. Access to Stromboli crater is nowadays subject to regulations. Hence, if one wishes to visit the lava eruptions near the peak, the only official choice is to take part in one of the numerous amazing trekking excursions. (4p.m. /10p.m.)
- Day 15: Arrivederci Sicily!
